Prague Global Policy Institute - Glopolis

Project Title: Trade and Development Policy Coherence in the EU and Czech Republic

Implementing Organisation: Prague Global Policy Institute- Glopolis, Czech Republic

Total Budget: 49 427 euros

Total Request from Fund: 20 015 euros

About Glopolis:

Prague Global Policy Institute- Glopolis’ goal is to promote understanding and critical consideration of globalization in the media, civil society, and the Czech political sphere. The long-term objective of Glopolis is to trigger a wider political debate on issues such as sustainable development, international trade and global governance in the Czech Republic as well as in the Central European region, and to engage the Czech Republic actively in global problem solving.

Description of the Project and Expected Results:

Glopolis’ main objective was to increase the policy coherence on trade and development not only at the Czech national level, but also at regional and European level. In order to address the regional level it would be working with NGOs from the other Visegrad countries: Hungary, Poland and Slovenia.

In the recent past Glopolis had published an analysis of the main trade and development issues in the context of WTO activities in 2005. However, as their knowledge of relevant EU processes and the link between these processes and those at national level was still very low they applied for funding from the PF to increase their own knowledge and capacity and help them advocate at the national and regional level.

Results after Implementation:

In line with the PF objective to build synergies and partnerships they cooperated with FoRs, the Czech GCAP (Global Campaign against Poverty) community and the Czechia against Poverty group. It also cooperated with the Seattle in Brussels Network. Trialog and EU and German NG(D)O experts made the regional seminar (organised 9 October 2006) a great success, while the national seminar (organised 22 November 2006) helped build the capacity of the national NG(D)Os and of the NG(D)O platform and raised awareness among ministry officials and most importantly parliamentarians.

Glopolis acknowledged that by, among others, funding human resources the PF has contributed to the great success of both seminars and to the strengthening of the capacity of Glopolis as such. As a side effect it could also have helped to facilitate the identification and successfully obtaining of additional funding for projected activities and the sustained support for the extended staff (extended from 4 to 7 under the PF).
